I've always believed that firefighters have relied on 4 basic principles in order to do what we do, and do it well. They are tattooed on me. These are princliples I learned growing up in a firehouse with my dad. I know they didn't know they were teaching me them... And I didn't know I was learning them until I became one.

Courage. It doesn't mean not being afraid, it just means being calm and doing what you have to do -- what others are relying on you for in a dangerous situation, as opposed to freaking out and running away.

Dedication. Being dedicated to your crew, the brotherhood, and to the public we protect. We demonstrate that when we study and train and put it in action during an emergency.

Sacrifice. That is demonstrated time and again. We put ourselves in harm's way to help perfect strangers.

Tradition. We remember the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of "the old guys," we live it and do it, and pass it on to the rooks. Tradition ensures that the other principles never die.
